Rugby-Leicester set up Saracens showdown after battling past Northampton

Leicester will face Saracens in their first English rugby Premiership final in nine years after they survived a severe test from local rivals Northampton to emerge 27-14 winners in a bruising semi-final at Welford Road on Saturday. Leicester, top of the league for the entire regular season, were on the back foot for much of the game and were lucky to be only 11-6 behind early in the second half after Tommy Freeman scored for the visitors, who had blown a hat-trick of first-half opportunities with poor handling. Leicester hit back with tries by George Ford and Freddie Steward and though Ford missed the second conversion to keep it a seven-point game, the flyhalf made amends with a drop goal three minutes from time and then sealed it with a last-minute penalty.

At Twickenham next Saturday they will play Saracens, who beat holders Harlequins 34-17 earlier. The final will be between the teams who finished first and second – having finished last and second-last two years ago, albeit Saracens being relegated through a massive points deduction for salary cap breaches.
