Kerala Students' Union Protests Against Education Minister Over Seat Shortage

Kerala Students' Union Protests Against Education Minister Over Seat Shortage

In a dramatic display of dissent, activists from the Kerala Students' Union (KSU) waved black flags at General Education Minister V Sivankutty on Sunday, placing them on his official vehicle in protest over an alleged shortage of plus-one seats in Malabar schools. The KSU, a student wing of the Congress party, staged a sudden demonstration as the minister's car exited his official residence.

Chants denouncing Minister Sivankutty and the Left government filled the air, with activists placing black flags on the bonnet of his car. The police intervened, forcibly removing the protestors from the road, allowing the minister to continue his journey.

An official statement revealed plans for a discussion with various student groups at the secretariat on June 25 to address the plus-one seat shortage issue. The Left government has been criticized following the suicide of a girl in Malappuram, linked to fears of not securing a plus-one seat. However, Minister Sivankutty maintains that no such crisis exists, citing vacant seats and permitted temporary batches each year.
