El Mayo Zambada and El Chapo's Son Arrested in El Paso: A Major Drug Bust

Mexican drug kingpin Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada was set to appear in an El Paso federal court on Friday, following his arrest alongside Joaquin Guzman Lopez, son of another infamous drug lord, in El Paso, Texas.

Zambada's initial court appearance was scheduled before U.S. Magistrate Judge Anne Berton. Defense lawyers for Zambada have not provided any comments on the case yet. Both Zambada and Guzman Lopez face significant charges in the U.S., including allegations of trafficking massive quantities of fentanyl and other drugs into the country.

The arrests are hailed as a monumental success for U.S. law enforcement and could drastically alter the dynamics of the Mexican drug trade. Mexico's Security Minister Rosa Rodriguez confirmed that while the Mexican government was briefed on the detentions by U.S. authorities, they were not involved in the operation.

Zambada, who is in his 70s, and Guzman Lopez, in his 30s, were captured after arriving in the El Paso area by private plane. Zambada co-founded the notorious Sinaloa Cartel with 'El Chapo', who was extradited to the U.S. in 2017 and is currently serving a life sentence in a maximum-security facility.
