Mamata's Walkout Sparks Federalism Debate at NITI Aayog Meet

Mamata's Walkout Sparks Federalism Debate at NITI Aayog Meet

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee abruptly exited a NITI Aayog meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing that she was prematurely cut off during her speech—a charge the central government refuted, asserting her speaking time had expired.

Banerjee, the sole opposition leader in attendance, claimed unequal speaking durations among chief ministers, alleging Andhra Pradesh's CM was given 20 minutes while she was halted after just five. This action, she contended, was insulting and indicative of unfair treatment of opposition voices.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the Press Information Bureau countered that Banerjee's mic was not cut off, insisting she utilized her complete allotted time. The incident has sparked a war of words between the TMC and the BJP, intensifying discussions on cooperative federalism and political biases in state budget allocations.
