U.S.-led mediators announced on Friday that they have obtained commitments from Sudan's warring factions to enhance access for humanitarian aid, following talks in Switzerland. However, the absence of the Sudanese army at the discussions has impeded further progress.
Over ten days, a new mediation group, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, worked towards securing more aid and protection for civilians. These efforts are crucial in addressing famine, mass displacement, and spreading disease following 16 months of conflict between the Sudanese army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Mediators, named the Aligned for Advancing Lifesaving and Peace in Sudan (ALPS) Group, succeeded in securing aid routes through the Adre border crossing and Dabbah Road. However, despite these advances, they admitted that the response remains insufficient for one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
