Delhi Zoo's Species Exchange: New Additions Amidst Recent Losses

Delhi Zoo's Species Exchange: New Additions Amidst Recent Losses

The Delhi Zoo is revitalizing its species roster by participating in an exchange program with the Surat Zoo. Two smooth-coated otters, a species absent since 2004, are expected to arrive by month's end, alongside ten star tortoises. In return, the Delhi Zoo will provide five sangai deer, two macaws, and four conures.

Sanjeet Kumar, the zoo director, announced that another exchange with the Lucknow Zoo is set, involving swamp deer for chinkara. A team is evaluating the otters in Surat to ensure proper housing and maintenance, with the exchange concluding by March's end. These additions will increase the total species in the zoo to 96.

The exchange follows a series of animal fatalities, including a leopard, a jaguar, and a nilgai, underscoring the zoo's urgency in species replenishment. Plans are underway to procure leopards, lions, and a Himalayan black bear to compensate for these losses, as the zoo continues its mission as a national model since 1959.
