AAP Criticizes Union Budget 2024-25, Calls It a 'Rattle Toy for Kids'

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday condemned the Union Budget 2024-25, terming it a 'jhunjhuna' or rattle toy for kids and claiming it lacked provisions for farmers, youngsters, traders, and women.

In a press conference, AAP MPs Sanjay Singh and Malvinder Singh Kang criticized Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's budget presentation in Parliament for allegedly depriving Delhi and Punjab of their fair shares in financial allocations.

Singh denounced the budget as a 'sarkar bachao, mahangai badhao' policy, arguing it offered nothing to the common people but provided relief to corporate houses. Key issues like minimum support price (MSP) for farmers, scrapping the Agniveer military recruitment scheme, reinstating the old pension system, and tax exemptions on essential items went unaddressed, he added.

Kang underscored the budget's failure to mention Punjab, which faced significant crop and property losses due to floods. He noted that the subsidy on fertiliser for Punjab's agriculture has been drastically cut from Rs 25,000 crore to Rs 16,000 crore, amid rising costs and farmer protests.

Singh said Delhi, despite contributing Rs 2.32 lakh crores annually in taxes, received no financial aid from the budget. Kang labeled the budget 'anti-Punjab' and highlighted the state's key contributions to national defense and food production, emphasizing that the budget ignored Punjab's security issues, including narcotics smuggling and border threats.
