French authorities have thwarted several plans to disrupt the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, including the arrest of a Russian man suspected of espionage, officials said Wednesday, just days before the Games' opening ceremony.
Paris prosecutors revealed the arrest of a 40-year-old Russian man at his apartment on accusations of “conducting intelligence work on behalf of a foreign power” aimed at destabilizing the Games. Items discovered during the search of his residence furthered these suspicions. The Russian Embassy in Paris has requested clarification from French officials.
The organizers of the Games are tackling significant security challenges, particularly in light of Russia's war in Ukraine and ongoing disinformation campaigns. In one case, French intelligence debunked a fake AI-generated video alleging a Hamas threat against the Olympics. To ensure safety, Paris is deploying 35,000 police officers daily, with a peak of 45,000 for the opening ceremony, and 10,000 soldiers contributing to security operations.
