The Indian Army has initiated a major procurement drive to bolster its self-reliance in defense technology, issuing a tender for 400 indigenously designed howitzers from Indian firms. A senior official confirmed to ANI that local defense giants like Bharat Forge, Larsen & Toubro, Adani, and the Ordnance Factory Board have received the tender for these 155 mm/52 caliber Towed Gun Systems. These companies are expected to play a crucial role in realizing the army's self-reliance goals under the Buy Indian-IDDM category.
The tender follows earlier steps taken by the army to equip its artillery regiments, including orders for 307 Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems and mounted gun systems for border deployments. The procurement of these new systems is a part of the Army's broader Mediumisation plan to upgrade its artillery regiments with indigenous technology by 2042.
Over the past decade, the Indian Army has signed four contracts for 155 mm howitzers, integrating these advanced systems into its artillery regiments. This latest tender underscores the ongoing commitment to enhancing India's defense manufacturing capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign technology in high-altitude deployments.
