The director of Patriot Park, Vyacheslav Akhmedov, and a high-ranking Defence Ministry official, Maj. Gen. Vladimir Shesterov, have been arrested on fraud charges, according to Russia's Investigative Committee on Monday.
The inquiry alleges that Akhmedov and Shesterov embezzled government funds designated for Patriot Park, a sprawling military exhibition facility launched in 2015 to promote patriotism among Russian youth. The site features weapon displays, museums, and even a Russian Orthodox cathedral.
The arrests are part of a broader crackdown on military officials, many connected to ex-Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, who were accused of corruption and mismanagement following Russia's military setbacks in Ukraine. Shoigu himself has faced criticism and remained in a high-profile Security Council position while his associates faced legal actions.
